How we build bundles and free gift offers without apps

Bundle builders, 2 + 2 offers and unlockable gifts, built natively in your Shopify theme instead of with an app. What that means and why we do it.

If you search for how to build a bundle on Shopify, almost every answer is an app. There are good ones. But every store that uses the same app ends up with the same builder, and on a premium brand that’s a problem you can see from across the room.

We build offers natively instead: bundle builders, 2 + 2 offers and unlockable free gifts, as custom sections in your own theme. Here’s what that means and why we do it.

What “native” means

Native means the builder is part of your theme, not bolted on. It’s designed from scratch in your brand kit, built as sections your team can edit in the theme editor, and it loads with your store rather than as an extra app on every page.

For the shopper, it just feels like your store. For your team, it’s one less app to pay for, update and work around.

Bundle builders

A bundle builder lets the shopper put together their own set, with the offer shown as they go. On Sassy Saints, shoppers build a box of nail colours. Pick two and the builder unlocks two free colours. Pick those, and a free welcome kit unlocks on top.

The point isn’t the discount. It’s that the shopper can see, at every step, what the next step is worth. That turns choosing into something that feels good rather than a sum.

The 2 + 2 offer

Buy two, get two free is a proven offer. The risk on a premium brand is that it reads like a clearance sale. So we redesign it in your brand: your type, your photography, your tone, with the offer explained plainly rather than shouted.

Unlockable gifts

Unlockable gifts reward the shopper for going one step further. Each step up in the bundle unlocks a gift, and they watch it unlock. On Sassy Saints’ bundle, the bigger bundles unlock the gifts, and the flexible plan is what unlocks them. Shopify’s cart updates without a page reload, so each gift can drop into the cart the moment it’s earned.

Did it work?

Sassy Saints’ offer builder lifted revenue per session by 7%. We judge offers on revenue per session because an offer changes how much people spend as well as whether they buy, and conversion rate alone would miss half of that.

The same thinking in the cart

Carts are the other place offers live. Charge’s dynamic subscription cart lets shoppers switch to subscribe and save in the cart, then shows upsells based on what’s in it. It lifted revenue per session by 12%. Bunker’s cart suggests add-ons for what’s already in the cart, each dropping straight in, and lifted it by 11%. Both are native, with no app.

You can play with all of these builds on our offer builders page and our cart upsells page.
